Winter by the Lake

Winter around Lake Achensee is diverse and full of quiet magic. Crisp air that tingles like champagne, a deep-blue sky, and a landscape that radiates tranquility—here, active winter fun blends with moments of relaxation. Whether on perfectly groomed slopes and trails or during a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride. Every winter day tells its own story.

Those seeking a slower pace will find it on the quiet winter hiking trails around the lake. The experience of nature becomes particularly intense on a snowshoe hike, when secluded spots open up amidst snow-covered mountain landscapes. And then there’s pure winter fun: sledding by day and by night. After a leisurely hike uphill, a warming stop at a mountain hut, and accompanied by the silence of the winter forest, you’ll glide back down into the valley—an experience that will stay with you for a long time.

In good physical condition

Cross-country skiing in the Karwendel Nature Park

For active foodies: In the 5-star Achensee cross-country skiing region, you can choose your favorite trail from one of Austria’s largest and best-maintained networks of trails. Glide effortlessly along more than 210 kilometers, into the winter-sleeping Karwendel valleys or along the deep-blue shores of Lake Achensee.

While the region has excellent snow conditions, nearly 40 kilometers of trails can be covered with artificial snow, ensuring a great cross-country experience even in warmer temperatures. Beginners will find trails here just as easily as experts and seasoned skiers. Whether you prefer skating or classic style, there’s something for everyone. Speaking of Nordic Cruising: wider and shorter skis are used here. This style of cross-country skiing mimics the natural walking motion; the diagonal stride is easy to learn and fun.

The slopes are waiting

Alpine skiing

Perfectly groomed slopes, well-maintained runs, and cozy huts for a hearty break—skiers and snowboarders will find their paradise around the Alpenrose. Three mountain railways and around 30 cable cars and lifts provide access to 50 kilometers of slopes. Waiting times at the lifts are a thing of the past. And even the youngest ski enthusiasts will find their ideal ski area, as there are numerous children’s lifts and practice slopes for our little guests.

Mild Winter
